Topic: The Universe
Content Area: Science
Grade: 4th

Instruction Objectives
Students will be able to:
- identify components of the Universe
- identify the composition and order of the Universe
- create a pictorial concept map
- complete a keyword search

Describe the Learning Activity
In this activity students will be researching the Universe. They will be responsible for determining the various components of the Universe, including solar systems, constellations, planets, and comets. They will research in the computer lab about the main concept of each component in groups of 2-3. They will identify the characteristics of each and where in the hierarchy it belongs. The teacher will help students decipher large words and assist them in identifying where the component belongs in the hierarchy. Once students are finished researching, the class as a whole will discuss the Universe and the research the students found. Students will use these facts to create a pictorial concept map showing the heirarchy of the universe. The students will use Kidspiration to create their concept maps. The concept map will be used to assess the students' learning. A sample concept map can be found here.

Rationale for Tool(s) use:
Using Kidspiration allows my students to create a concept map using something other than paper and pencils. I think that this would really excite them about an otherwise large concept. Using Kidspiration, students would be able to add pictures, icons, etc. to make their concept map more interesting. By having the students create a concept map, they will be able to breakdown a rather large concept which may help aid students' comprehension with a goal of increasing students' understanding. By using visual representations of the components, students will be able to more easily recognize the differences found between the components as opposed to using just words.

Evaluation

Students would be evaluated using another concept map. I would use Kidspiration to create a blank concept map and give it to my students to quiz them on the solar system. I would be able to see how well they understood the way the universe is broken down and would also see how well they understand concept mapping. The students would help me to evaluate Kidspiration. I would evaluate the effectiveness of Kidspiration by monitoring the reactions and interactions of students. I would have the students rate Kidspiration based on the following: ease of use, enjoyment, helpfulness and understanding, and overall appeal.
